Nannies Would Rather Not Work for Blacks

Like hailing a cab in midtown Manhattan, searching for a nanny can be an exasperating, humiliating exercise for many blacks, the kind of ordeal that makes them wonder aloud what year it is.  Stereotypes of being cheap and uppity keep black families without quality childcare.

$1 Million Bet: Young Democrats put their paper on YOUNG PEOPLE!!

Young Democrats of America Launch Major Investment for 2006 Elections and Release Young Voter Report at Las Vegas Conference

Much in part to a new focus of partisan youth groups and new technologies, including blogs and social networking groups such as Myspace, young people are increasingly aware and dialoguing about politics. In fact, recent polling suggests that 73% of young people plan on voting in the November 2006 elections and the vast majority are planning on voting for Democrats continuing the trend from 2004 and 2005.

In 2004 and 2005, Young Democrats of America (YDA) spent 1.6 million dollars contacting over 365,000 young voters in key states. YDA’s investment in the youth vote helped spur the highest increase in turnout of young people in over a decade, produced the only age group to vote for Kerry and helped secured a win for Governor Kaine in Virginia. YDA will again invest up to $1 million in the 2006 mid-term elections to ensure that the 2004 and 2005 youth turnout becomes a long-term trend and not a flash in the pan. YDA’s vision is simple, to create a long-term bloc of young people voting for Democrats and advancing progressive issues.

YDA doesn’t just run programs. YDA participated in experiments and evaluation programs to prove their results and methods work to get young people to the polls for Democrats. YDA released the findings in a new publication “A Gift to Democrats: How Democrats can Win Elections by Making Young People a Top Priority” at the conference in Vegas. The publication was sponsored by the Lewis and Rappaport families.

To order print copies so you can deliver them to leaders in your state, email office@yda.org.

Poll Shows Many Can't Find La. on Map

Poll Shows Many Can't Find La. on Map
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, Associated Press Writer

Tue May  2, 10:06 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn't locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi.

Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 fared even worse with foreign locations: six in 10 couldn't find Iraq, according to a Roper poll conducted for National Geographic.

"Geographic illiteracy impacts our economic well-being, our relationships with other nations and the environment, and isolates us from the world," National Geographic president John Fahey said in announcing a program to help remedy the problem. It's hoping to ...

STUDY PROVIDES INSIGHT ON MOTIVATING YOUNG PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER

MTV released today the results of Just Cause, a research study which deconstructs how youth perceive "activism" and explores the motivating factors and barriers in their decision to become involved in social causes. On behalf of MTV, U30 Group conducted the segmentation study with more than 1200 young people, including expert interviews, ethnographies and a national poll of a representative sample with participants ages 12 to 24, from December 2005 to April 2006.
